Monkey Hill

Contrast these two depictions of an area once known as "Monkey Hill" in Flushing. Harriet Dondero Lawson's whimsical account of the name's origin, starting on page 48, appears to be an invention (intended or not) to sanitize and perhaps obscure the darker history conveyed in R. B. Roosevelt's depictions of Irish residents of the area.
We at the Queens Memory Project are interested in gathering more information about Monkey Hill, a small area that is today divided in half by College Point Blvd, starting just north of the Queens Botanical Garden and extending up to Maple Ave. Please log in to leave comments in these records if you know something about Monkey Hill.
